POSTED: 8:51 am CDT August 11, 2007 UPDATED: 8:56 am CDT August 11, 2007 RATLIFF CITY, Okla. -- A car drifted left of center along a Carter County highway Friday and slammed into four motorcycles, killing three people and leaving two others in critical condition, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Shannon Lowe, 39, of Duncan, was driving west on state Highway 7 just west of Ratliff City Friday when her 1995 Nissan Altima crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the four motorcycles, the OHP reported. Pronounced dead at the scene were: Betty Day, 57, of Terral; Roger Gunter, 59, of Ryan; and Linda Gunter, 57, of Ryan, who was a passenger on Roger Gunter's motorcycle. Another motorcyclist, Frank Day, 64, of Terral, was admitted in critical condition to an Oklahoma City hospital. Lowe also was transported in critical condition. A fourth motorcyclist and his passenger weren't injured in the collision, and a fifth motorcyclist was hit with flying debris but wasn't injured.

Both Roger and Linda Gunter were wearing helmets, the patrol said.

???????? It is nice to know that Roger and Linda were wearing Helmets isn't? What also may have been nice to know is two other minor little questions (well maybe two)??? Was she charged with anything???? Why did she "drift" over the center line???? And the most important question of all, because I am seeing this enough now that it has caught my attention,
how does anyone "drift" over the center line??? Following is guesswork as no facts other than those reported are known. It would seem that one "drifts" over the center line for one reason.........They are under the "influence". So the question becomes of what? Alcohol? drugs?
Detectable by Breathalyzer or blood test. Or could they be "influenced" by something that has them "distracted" to such an extent they did not notice the drift. What could cause such distraction? Cell phone? Searching for DVD? Playing with the radio? Applying make-up? Searching for Cigarettes ? Singing Karaoke on their new GPS enabled muti-media player (see
post 8-4-07) or any number of actions that do not have anything to do with driving. It might seem that the term DUI can take on a whole new meaning. Does it not?

Our prayers and sympathies go out to the friends and loved ones of these victims. Let us also pray that JUSTICE is done. rc

Thank You Georgia

Whenever riding in Georgia. I have mixed feelings. O.k. it's a helmet state. But any run I have ever been on in Georgia. (south Ga. anyway) has always had police participation. I was especially impressed with the respect the Thomasville, Ga. police demonstrated during an escort for a returning fallen serviceman.

Apparently they have it right in other areas of concern to those who ride.
