Revisting Free Speech- MINE damnit and I will not be censured-threats or no

On 8-29-07 we posted on how not only the government, but major corporations including the NFL were engaged in practices designed to limit free speech which can be found here: Click on Even the NFL would restrict FREE SPEECH??? How far back have we gone???Which of course is not the first time we have posted about free speech. We did a post awhile back about how a California court agreed that it was ok for the promoters of an "Annual Garlic Festival" in California to order members of the Top Hatters MC to leave because their vests violated the following " unwritten" dress code policy barring, "attendees from wearing gang colors or other "demonstrative insignia," including motorcycle club insignia, according to court records".

Now an appeals court has agreed to reconsider that court opinion. Read the story here:

In the following post dated 9-14-07 which can be read here: Click Wasting Time???? I wrote how I was contacted by the associated press and asked to give a "Bikers" perspective on the new NTSB recommendations that all states pass Helmet laws. Now I do know that the interview went out because a copy was sent to me. Along with a note stating I could not release
it to anybody (hell it's my words)???

Well I did a tiring search for not only my interview, but any news story from the mainstream media that carried "biker reaction". I looked to the state MRO website for the ABATE presidents reaction to the NTSB comments. Nothing? Of course internet sites of interest to bikers are raising hell about the recommendations but you would not know it from the mainstream press. WHY??? Has the total press gone against those that can offer an alternative to what the NTSB admitted today was incorrect???

The following was posted on B&R's forum as todays NTSB hearings were watched: Ellingstad (sp?) said due to the "substantial public attention" their recommendations raised, and questions regarding the statistics, the NTSB staff would be "pulling together" new materials to support their state lobbying efforts. When pressed by Hersmann for a hard number as to how many bikers' lives might be saved by their lid law recommendation, Ellingstad admitted it was less than less than half of the annual fatalities number they implied last week. He claimed that the lives that universal lid laws would save would still be a "significant improvement", but he refused to state a specific number or percentage of any kind.

For more reaction see here

So the upshot is, the mainstream media can take a story and slant it any which way they want. They can ask for my opinion but if it doesn't jive with their agenda they can not only choose not to print it (their right) but tell me I can not even share my own damn words. Not on a freaking bet. So here is my damn interview with warning included and see if it matches anything you read in your paper or heard on your news...........

Appreciate the help on the story today. This is the TV script, which reads a little differently. The SOTs are your verbatim quotes. (my note: taken from about 10 minutes worth so edited to say the least)

¶ DESCRIPTION: It's been seven years since Florida repealed its mandatory helmet law for everyone 21 or older. The National Transportation Safety Board would like that to change. The group is urging states to states to require all motorcyclists to wear helmets. There is no such legislation pending in Florida.

¶ SCRIPT:

¶ ---LEAD---

¶ The federal government is urging all states to enact laws requiring motorcyclists to wear helmets.

¶ That's prompting some harsh criticism from bikers in Florida, who say the feds are missing the real safety problem on the roads.

¶ ---VO---

¶ Florida repealed its mandatory helmet law for bikers 21 and older seven years ago.

¶ Now the National Transportation Safety Board wants all states to have a law mandating bikers to wear helmets.

¶ The board argues head injuries are a leading cause of deaths in motorcycle accidents and helmets would save a lot of lives.

¶ Fatal motorcycle crashes in Florida have risen each year since the helmet law was repealed. The latest available data shows 441 motorcyclists were killed in 2005 _ more than double the number in 1999.

¶ Biker "R.C." Conroy says those numbers don't reflect the real safety problem on Florida's roads.

¶ Conroy says distracted drivers, especially those using cell phones, are the main cause of motorcycle fatalities.

¶ He says rather than forcing motorcyclists to wear helmets, there should be stiffer penalties for drivers who swerve between lanes and a complete ban on cell phones for anyone behind the wheel of a vehicle.

¶ ---SOT--- Conroy (:20)

¶ "Ban all wireless communications immediately. You do that one thing and you will watch the accident rate for cars and motorcyclists decrease dramatically immediately. But that's a hot potato legislatively. There isn't a legislator in the world that wants to touch that because they're afraid they won't get re-elected."

¶ ---SOT--- Conroy (:16) Description: Conroy says the feds should focus more on the real safety problem on the roads, which is distracted drivers.

¶ "The cause is, still to this day, two-thirds of the motorcycle fatalities are caused by other vehicle drivers who hit motorcyclists. If they don't hit a motorcyclist, the motorcyclist doesn't need a helmet."

¶ ---SOT--- Conroy (:23) Description: Conroy responds to the fact that motorcycle fatalities have increased in Florida each year since the helmet law was repealed in 2000. He says you have to consider that cell phone use is also up dramatically in that time and there are more distracted drivers as a result.

¶ "Getting a driver's license is a privilege. It does not convey to you any right to talk on a cell phone, read a newspaper, eat while you're going down the road. What it does is it entitles you to the privilege to drive responsibly and in such a manner that you are not going to kill somebody."

¶ ---SOT--- Maj. Duarte (:15) Description: The Florida Highway Patrol does not take a stand on policy issues such as whether there ought to be a helmet law, but police do recommend that motorcyclists wear protective gear, including helmets.

¶ "When you're a motorcyclist and you're actually on the roadway, to have a helmet, to have protective gear, to have the gloves, is going to provide that layer of protection in case there is a crash."

¶ ---TAG---

¶ While motorcycle fatalities have been rising in Florida since the repeal of the helmet law, Conroy says you have to consider that cell phone use has also increased dramatically in that time.

¶ Also, Florida has seen a big increase in the number of bikers on the roads.

¶ The Florida Highway Patrol does not take a stand on policy issues such as whether there ought to be a helmet law, but police do recommend that motorcyclists wear protective gear, including helmets.

¶ There currently is no mandatory helmet legislation pending in Florida. State law does require motorcyclists under the age of 21 to wear helmets. All bikers must carry at least $10,000 of medical coverage.
