Re: Hope Steffy
To the Honorable Governor and Attorney General of the state of Ohio,
Please note that this has also been addressed to Sheriff Timothy Swanson of Stark County Ohio. However honorable can not be applied to one sworn to protect the public and hides behind the threat of a law suit to avoid taking responsibility for actions taken under his command. Who also apparently does not understand the definition of "strip search". Is that the route the rest of Ohio will take?
The actions of this Officer and his department in the Hope Steffy case are unconscionable. Even more disturbing, as if anything else could be, is the question, "What sort of environment exists in this county/state that would tolerate such action and how many times has this occurred before?" How much film exist that we have not seen?
There are no excuses Gentleman. This is still America. Despite the direction our leaders have tried to take this country. No matter what spin one attempts to put on this story the videos demonstrate that the officers violated county policy as it relates to strip searches. These officers clearly violated that policy and violated Hope Steffy.
As our government is called into question for it's treatment of prisoners overseas we now must call our government into question over the treatment of its citizens here in the "Homeland"!
What line will be drawn before we see pictures emanating from Ohio jails reminiscent of "Abu Ghraib"?
You may think this note an over reaction, but this is how it starts gentleman. You have proven what many disenfranchised American citizens have always known. Once the police get hold of you your only saving grace is prayer!

"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear": Harry S Truman

"The government is the potent omnipresent teacher. For good or ill it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. To declare that the end justifies the means -- to declare that the government may commit crimes -- would bring terrible retribution": Justice Louis D. Brandeis

"A general dissolution of the principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy... While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but once they lose their virtue, they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader... If virtue and knowledge are diffused among the people, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great security:" John Adams
This is reminiscent of "Abu Ghraib"! Hate to mention it, but they've already crossed that line.
ReplyDeleteAnother Update:
ReplyDeleteAs of May 5th sheriff Swanson has still NOT turned over all the video on the Hope Steffy case!
And now it looks like a 5th woman is coming forward with her story. She said she fears reprisals for speaking out. (She works in the penal system, so I guess she knows how stuff works in that county.)
I can see why, it seems that everyone in that county is part of the problem, at least all the ones I have talked to.

And now surprise, the State Attorney General, who is supposed to be investigating this incident, is himself being investigated.
How would he be able to investigate the Steffy case, when he himself seems to be part of the problem????
They called for his resignation, but he refused, so now they are going the impeachment route.
CUT&PASTE:
Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann has refused to step down as Ohio’s Attorney General, despite pleas that he do so or face impeachment.

This whole county needs to be cleaned up from top to bottom!!
