Awhile back we posted a fairly lengthy post entitled AMERICA-Land of the Free??? wherein we discussed Americas, or at least our America's governments propensity to solve all social ill's by throwing people in prison. Making Americas prison system the largest in the world.
We did not know at the time What the Department of Corrections in the fine state of Florida had in mind. You know Florida, the state of the "hanging chads" and botched primary's. The state with one of the largest prison populations in the Country that is always looking for cash to build more prison beds as it increasingly becomes one of the larger "police states" in the country. The state that can't seem to increase it's coffers enough through the seizure of private property that it has to seek out more ways to seize more property, i.e HB137. Whose jails are already bursting at the seems with "perpetrators" of non-violent victim less crimes.
Now Florida, like many states in these times, is facing a heck of a budget crises and many agencies will have to cut back. What is the Florida Department of Corrections answer????
From FADAA (Florida Alcohol and Drug Abuse Association) legislative alert dated Mach 18 (this was debated at the Capital yesterday but attempts to find any in depth coverage in our local news media at this time have met with little success other than a blurb on a local TV station last night):
The Department of Corrections is recommending all correctional substance abuse programs be eliminated.
Also recommending the elimination of community faith based initiatives, pre-trial intervention programs, and drug court funding.
300 security staff and 350 probation officer jobs are on the chopping block, (Which means folk in prison will have to stay there longer).
This all after Governor Crist recommended that Substance Abuse Programming be increased by $28.8 million.
As one who is only alive and not in prison today by virtue of the help of various substance abuse programs I can only say, "ARE YOU GUYS (Dept of Corrections and anybody else that thinks this will alleviate any problem) FREAKING STUPID
Does anybody in the government read a freaking study or research (they haven't paid for to say what they want hear) thats says anything other than what they want to hear. Look I'm freaking crazy ok. But I ain't the only one that ain't wasting taxpayer dollars because I got help when I couldn't help myself.
But I ain't that crazy. No why? I'm searching for public companies that build prisons cause 'm buying stock in them bitches.
