Last Saturday heading down to Scooter Haven when I hit Perry, Fl traffic was being rerouted. Perry is a fairly small town in a rural county and traffic is usually slow. Nobody's in a hurry.Ahead of me I see cop cars, fire engine and people standing around in the street. As I get closer I see the reason. There is a body, covered, laying in the middle of the street.
Immediately, as probably most people who ride motorcycles do, I start scanning looking for a motorcycle and a wrecked car. Seeing neither I start thinking maybe it was a pedestrian crossing the street. It was obviously well covered and I saw no need to stop and gawk and continued on.
Last night my wife checked her e-mail and this is what she found:
Dear Friends,
I’m going to tell you this and then I don’t want to mention it again.
Yesterday I went to Perry to have an estate sale at my Mother’s house. My brother, nephew and I decided to go each lunch before we left town. We had just finished eating when my brother got a horrible look on his face and mumbled some words that I have thankfully forgotten. A car had pulled out into the path of a motorcycle. I turned around just in time to see a woman flying through the air. She landed on the road and never moved again. The man she had been riding with was rolling down the road and stopped at the median just behind me. He was put in an ambulance, but they didn’t even turn on the siren when they left and the police officers said they would be surprised if he made it. They didn’t know how he was still breathing.
I see it again and again in my mind, and I can only think of my friends that ride motorcycles. Please be careful and please, please wear helmets. That couple did not wear any and I cannot begin to describe how horrible it was. That man did nothing to cause the accident. They appeared to be on a pleasant Saturday afternoon ride. He did everything in his power to avoid the car, but it was impossible. I’m sure they meant as much to someone else as my friends and family mean to me.
Please be careful,
Trish
Again they are a small rural town so the only way to get info was to call the police department today which I did. Yes, one person was killed and the accident is still under investigation. No charges filed.Trish
The note isn't posted to advocate for helmets. The person who sent it doesn't ride motorcycles but knows my lady does. The note is just posted cause I thought maybe it should be.Add to Technorati Favorites
On March 19th, 2008 one day before your post, my fiance and I in Deland, Fl was involved in a motorcycle accident that took his life instantly and had me flying 30 ft thru the air up over him and the car that drove directly across 4 lanes of traffic into our path. Today, Oct 12, is his birthday, instead of decorating a birthday cake, I was at the accident site, decorating his memorial sign with happy birthday balloons. I can't say enough watch out for motorcycles, I lost the love of my life, and his family a great son and brother to three sisters. Scott you will always be loved and missed.
