More than 150 people spent the afternoon remembering the service and sacrifice of the 88,000 Americans who are estimated to have gone missing since World War I. For 29 years the third Friday in September has been designated National POW/MIA Recognition Day. From Tallahassee Democrat
Between 400 and 500 people braved swarms of love bugs and dragonflies Sunday for a rare chance to visit the 88-foot-tall lighthouse. The occasion was Florida Lighthouse Day, which is Sept. 20 but was celebrated a day late in St. Marks because Saturday was the refuge's coastal cleanup day.
The goal is to raise "awareness and excitement" about lighthouses, said Robin Will, a refuge ranger with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. She said the service is hoping to acquire the lighthouse from the Coast Guard, which is focused largely on counter-terrorism and has little money for preservation. That will require private donations. "Lighthouses in many places are crumbling into the sea," Will said. "They need to be saved as an icon.Tallahassee Democrat
A blustery and overcast afternoon could not overshadow the emotion that was palpable. As A.J. Perrone told of the plight of former prisoners, men and women — most of whom were old enough to serve in Vietnam — listened to intricate details of the torture and pain soldiers endured. Parrone told members of the Vietnam Vets and Legacy Vets Motorcycle Clubs that all prisoners of war have things in common. "They all must have suffered horribly, they all must have struggled to survive. ...They all must have hoped they would be returned to their homeland if they died," Parrone said. "They all must have prayed that they are not forgotten." Tallahassee Democrat
Re Saturdays FSU game: Heading into the season, university officials told hoteliers and local tourism officials that this game would not attract as many fans to Tallahassee, as opposed to future opponents. But those projections were dashed after fans headed to Doak Campbell Stadium, many arriving hours before the 7 p.m. kickoff. Perhaps they were driven by FSU's two consecutive blowouts over inferior opponents.
The frenzy turned to anguish after the Demon Deacons defeated the Seminoles 12-3.
They all (POW/MIA's) must have hoped they would be returned to their homeland if they died," Parrone said. "They all must have prayed that they are not forgotten."
There are a number of national days that have been set aside to honor the foundations of our country and those who have helped to establish and maintain it's sovereignty and integrity. Problem is, over time they have morphed into BBQ days or Football days and beach days and.........................
You all know that if you do not maintain your motorcycle, sooner or later it will leave you alone on the side of the road. Look around you folk, this is a time when more laws, ordinances, regulations, restrictions and rules are being implemented restricting your freedoms than ever before. It is a time whenor finacial markets are crumbling and the government has moved in to take more control.
It is a time of Big Business and Big Government colluding to insure they can control the problems that they themselves created. As I right oil trading is up limit. Trading stopped to give it time to catch it's breath for another raid on your pocket full of dollars that continue to be worth less than they were yesterday.
And the peoples priorities are? Will there be no other "Greatest Generation" ?
"chase butterflies if you will
it brings me great joy to see you happy and carefree
and much time to make deeper the pit
do not concern yourself with evil
on such a sunny day
play and make yourselves happy
feast upon the joys of life
for tender your flesh will be
when I savor the sound of your screams
after feasting"Add to Technorati Favorites
