Update on area 9-11 memorial services

From the Tallahassee Democrat

The city of Tallahassee is planning events Thursday to mark the seven-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C.

The Tallahassee Fire Department and the Tallahassee Police Department are having a memorial ceremony 9:45 a.m. at City Hall, 300 S. Adams St.

Also, a moment of silence will be observed Thursday morning at Tallahassee Regional Airport.

Another ceremony, hosted by TFD and the Leon County Cooperative Extension Service, is set for 1:30 p.m. at Fire Station 11, 8752 Centerville Road. The program will include the posting of colors and the ringing of a memorial bell.

A garden was dedicated last year at the Fire Department in honor of firefighters who lost their lives responding to the attack on the World Trade Center towers. New to the garden is a six-foot-tall replica of the towers.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office, 2825 Municipal Way, will also host a short ceremony at 8:40 a.m. that will include lowering the flag to half-staff and two student trumpet musicians from Rickards High School playing the national anthem and "Taps." A moment of silence will be observed.

Gov. Charlie Crist, in accordance with a proclamation issued by President George Bush, has asked that all state and local governments fly their U.S. and state flags at half-staff on Sept. 11 in remembrance of those who died as a result of the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001.
