State attorney Megs deems it necessary to lecture TPD Chief Dennis Jones
"For many years Officer Loftland's inappropriate conduct has gone unchecked."
"The distrust of Officer Loftlands reports, statements and representations is not simply a current problem based on the pending Order to Show Cause, but has been an ongoing problem for a very long time."
"Officer Loftland has no credibility with the Judges of Leon County and, as result of a number of issues, has lost credibility with our prosecutors."
"We take our duties and responsibilities seriously and will not have the integrity of Assistant State Attorneys or our office questioned due to the conduct of Officer Loftland"
"I do not no what course of action your department may take as a result of this letter.................."
O.K. can you can read the rest of this document teaching Chief Jones some of the finer point of
ethically enforcing the law by downloading the pdf. doc. here.
But heres the gig for those who may have residences in Tallahassee but actually live in the land of OZ. Consider the cost TO YOU of failing to stand up for the rights of individuals.
Besides the lawsuit that Tallahassee is going to face relating to the Rachel Hoffman case which is a given is going to cost the city big time. Now 100+ DUI convictions are going to have to be reviewed. That will cost money. Some them will have to be retried. That will cost money. Count on a number of them being overturned.
Now consider how a DUI conviction can cost jobs, families and ruin lives. Some of them folk that may get a conviction overturned ain't gonna be happy with just getting the conviction overturned. They are going to want to sue to get their lives back.
HELLO, who is going to pay for all this Tallahassee? You the citizens will, through increased taxes and loss of services to pay for what? A dysfunctional police department?
Nope! Your failure to heed the words of Thomas Jefferson, you know the dude that wrote the Declaration of Independence, you know what that is dont'cha? Well there is this little thing he said that had it been heeded in Tallahassee may have saved the citizens what is going to be a heap of bucks,
Tallahassee Police officer found in contempt over DUI cases-TPD chief has lost control
My guess since since Tallahassee Police Chief Dennis Jones is till in office, is that the citizens of Tallahassee either,A. Don't read a newspaper, or
B. Could care less about the rights of their FELLOW citizens. Blindly adopting the attitude that stuff happens to others it won't happen to me.
C. Do not understand that by the time a screw up hits the press doesn't mean it's the first time the screw up has occurred. It usually means that screw ups are ongoing and that as a result of such sooner or later some of them are going to make the press.
updated Thursday from the Tallahassee Democrat:
A Tallahassee police investigator has been found guilty of non-criminal contempt for violating a rule prohibiting witnesses from talking to each other and giving false testimony during a DUI trial, according to court documents.
Investigator Holly Lofland was sentenced Wednesday by Leon County Judge Augustus D. Aikens to six months' probation in his court.
State Attorney Willie Meggs, in a July 9 letter to Tallahassee Police Department Chief Dennis Jones, pointed out perceived problems with Lofland, including discrepancies between DUI arrest reports she wrote and evidence from in-car videos.
"It appears to our office that Officer Lofland is always trying to win as opposed to imparting truth," Meggs wrote in the letter, which the Tallahassee Democrat obtained Thursday.
He said her "win-at-all-cost attitude" has severely damaged her credibility with the State Attorney's Office and the court.
"If attorneys don't win at trial on her cases, she is quick to point out our failure to adequately prosecute," Meggs wrote to the chief. "The majority of your officers do not take this aggressive, abusive attitude and work well with this office as we try to reach just verdicts."
The State Attorney's Office earlier decided not to file criminal charges against Lofland over testimony she'd given in court. A TPD internal-affairs investigation also cleared her.
(COMMENT: Hello, is that a surprise? Does not TPD have a vested interest in insuring their credibility? Have they not yet learned that by sweeping stuff under the rug they further damage their credibility?)
However, TPD spokesman David McCranie said Lofland has been suspended with pay pending a separate internal-affairs investigation. McCranie wouldn't give details because the investigation is ongoing. Lofland was stripped of her gun, badge and patrol car.
Well yeah, after the Rachel Hoffman case it would probably be a good idea to have another separate investigation. But how about and external investigation? Done by Investigators from outside the state? Why not? What is their to lose? What are they afraid might be uncovered? Are they afraid to have an objective, unbiased, investigation? Or will Tallahassee continue to allow it's police department to be run by Barney Fife, whoops excuse me I didn't mean that. Barney had a motorcycle and would have no problem with escorting returning servicemen home, football or no.
