Motorcycle group protests actions by State Patrol

SEATTLE - A motorcycle rights group is demanding answers from the Washington State Patrol.
They say during an annual rally at the Capitol this year, a state trooper recorded the license plate numbers of those attending.

The sergeant was seen wandering through the parking lot and using a voice recorder to take down the license plate numbers from motorcycles. At one point he even backs into the bushes to get a better look at the tags.

"Seeing an officer from the State Patrol in the bushes, doing this is just shocking,' said Martin Fox, an attorney for the motorcycle rights group ABATE.

Fox says ABATE members were inside the Capitol building, meeting with their legislators when the trooper recorded the license tags.

"My concern is anyone going to the Legislature to have their views heard are being put on a list and it's not what we do in America," said Fox.

The State Patrol says rival gang members were seen riding onto the Capitol campus and this recording was just good police work.

"Motorcycle gangs do have a record of violence against each other, and if something broke out it would be nice to have a record of who was here," said Sgt. Freddy Williams.

"They want to know why it was being done and where this information was going," said Fox.
"I can see how it might be cause for concern, but your license is public record, public knowledge, it's there for everyone to look at," said Williams.

License plate numbers are there for everyone to see, but even the State Patrol acknowledges that if you saw someone recording your plate number, you'd want to know why and just how that information would be used.

That State Patrol says it's not keeping the plate numbers it gathered at the rally.
The ABATE organization is still waiting to get that in writing.

The trooper involved is currently on vacation in Mexico and the State Patrol has been unable to reach him for details on what he was doing.

The details of the ceremonies are evolving, but, now that the times have been established, our Ceremonies Chair, Ms. Pam Nobles, is quickly filling-in-the-blanks. Any suggestions should be posed directly to her.

While Tom Brocato reported that he has gathered a large number of eager volunteers, he won't turn back anyone who wants to be a part of this. On Saturday, hundreds of visitors will be crowding into Apalachicola to visit its historic homes, and the Veterans Memorial Plaza should experience a lot of traffic. Please direct all offers to volunteer as guides, counselors or computer operators (Wall data base) to Tom.

Tom Daly is responsible for volunteers -- both groups & individuals -- for the reading of names. Readers will be on-duty while the Plaza is open to the public, except during the ceremonies as noted above. When each of the 58,000 plus names have been read, this duty shall terminate. If you'd like to volunteer, please contact Tom.

Ms. Patty Creamer is bringing together plans for our Student Day. She has assembled a diverse cast of students from Franklin County and throughout the area. Patty has planned a number of events which will serve to celebrate patriotism and to help make the conflict in Vietnam more relative to young people. Any suggestions for additional student participants should be directed to Patty.

Again, if you have questions, I will get you an answer. If you'd like to volunteer and need for me to forward your request to any of the above-named, please contact me -- PelikanFL@aol.com -- and I will see to it that your request is forwarded. Contributions are welcomed and can be addressed to the "Three Servicemen Statute South, Inc.," a not-for-profit organization.
