one motorcycle riding crazy...........

This post will be going in the little monthly, when we can afford it, newsletter rag we put out. Fortunately we have a benefactor to thank for this months issue. We don't put out like a high glossy fluff rag. Ours is like a copied black and white thing with just a few courageous advertisers.

When we say courageous we mean like they know there is no way we are going to be politically correct and will more than likely piss somebody off. They also know we are going to tell the truth and ain't likely to prostitute ourselves to the likes of NCOM/AIM and some of the others you see in every high dollar rag that is just a copy of some other high dollar rag  just to put out high glossy pics model chicks on MC's that a heap of people can't afford. SO needless to say we don't have a lot of advertisers.

Nope, we just post pics of real biker ladies on real bikes doing real stuff and printing real truth. Of course that means we have to bypass advertising for some of the whores out there that claim they are a biker business selling biker products built by little biker elves in a little biker forest. Screw em.

So since I know I'm a sob I can say this dude is one crazy motorcycle ridin sob. My only problem with Bruce, who I am proud to call a friend, is that somehow he has the ability to piss off more people than I can. I can understand it though, he called me to task one time and I was thinkin to myself, "self, this is no way to make friends and influence people."

But what really aggravated the hell out of me was he was right.  Damn I hate that.  Dont'cha hate it when somebody besides yourself is right? oh well....

Right or wrong, if you are a "BIKER" you gots to respect the grueling stuff this dude does.  Like one time at a fairly high rate of speed, I'm talking real speed here ok, he has a front tire blow out and manages to keep the bike up.  Dudes and dudettes, I can droop mine in the driveway.  Blow out or not!

All we can say is keep on riding............

BRUCE ARNOLD HITS IRON BUTT RIDE 5-0 LONG DISTANCE MOTORCYCLE RIDING BENCHMARK

Of the tens of millions of motorcyclists here and abroad, only 50,000 or so have been certified as riding over 1,000 miles in under 24 hours by the Iron Butt Association (IBA).  Of these, only 11 have completed over 20 certified distance and endurance rides and qualified as members of the IBA Mile Eater GOLD Club.  And of these, only BMW rider and LDR legend Jack Shoalmire is credited with 50 or more certifications.  My current riding resume pales in comparison to Jack's, but nevertheless at 10:46pm on Saturday (19 June 2010) I logged a Publix/Presto ATM slip to mark the successful completion of what should be certified as my 5th SaddleSore 2000 and my 50th Iron Butt Ride.  And once it is, according to IBA founder and President Mike Kneebone, that will be the first time a Harley-Davidson rider has hit the 50-ride benchmark, and the first time any Iron Butt rider has completed 50 certified rides on the same motorcycle.

I had intended something more ambitious for "Ride 5-0" than a SaddleSore 2000 comprised of two round trips to nowhere.  But times being what they are, I am fortunate and grateful to be doing any distance riding at all...  Anyway, the SS2000 requires that you ride over 2,000 miles in under 48 hours.  On this particular ride, I covered 2,087 miles in 40 hours 27 minutes total time, or 30 hours 3 minutes riding time.  On the first leg (day one), I rode from Miami Beach FL to Cecil GA and back via Alligator Alley and IH-75, covering a distance of 1,048 miles in 14 hours 44 minutes for an MTH of 71.13.  On the second leg (day two), I rode roundtrip from Miami Beach FL to Ridgeland SC and back via IH-95, covering a distance of 1,039 miles in 15 hours 19 minutes for an MTH of 67.83.  There are no world records or even personal bests in any of these statistics.  But it was a safe and successful ride, and that must satisfice.  Here are the highlights:

Leg 1: Round-Trip from Miami Beach FL to Cecil GA

Sleepy witness signatures gathered, at 6:19am on Friday, 18 June 2010, I pulled an ATM slip at a SoBe Wachovia and logged the start of my ride.  It was a typical muggy South Florida summer morning.  But once I got rolling, the wind evaporated the beads of sweat and I had cool running all the way west across an almost empty Alligator Alley.  Workday morning traffic slowed me down as I headed north up IH-75 through Naples and Fort Myers, but once the traffic thinned I had perfect riding conditions all the way to Tampa.  Just north of there, I hit the first of three major accident-related traffic jams and rubbernecker slowdowns (that seem to occur every time I ride that stretch of interstate).  These queues mandated some creative lane definition in order to maintain an acceptable pace of forward progress.  But from my gas stop in Alachua northward into Georgia, all the cagers kept their eyes on the road and their shiney sides up, which allowed me to sail on into my turnaround p!
oint at Cecil with no further interruptions or irritations beyond the seemingly perpetual road construction along that route.

Heading south back to Florida, it was midafternoon by the time I reached Ocala.  In Central Florida in the summer, it rains almost every afternoon, and this day was no exception.  Those large, cold thundercloud raindrops were a welcome relief from the sweltering heat.  But after a couple of hundred miles, I'd had all the relief I needed.  The downpour finally began to dissipate as I rounded the bend towards Alligator Alley just after 7:00pm.  From that point on, the red-orange sun hanging low in the west behind me seemed to be battling yet another band of clouds in front of me for dominance of the turbulent skies over the Everglades.  And from this age-old natural conflict came a Kodak moment that made me regret not having a camera:

I was approaching the Broward end of the Alley and home when a glistening in Hidalgo's left rearview mirror caught my eye.  I glanced over to see the reflection of a round red sun sitting in the middle of a bright blue strip of daylight bounded by the horizon beneath it and a cloud bank above.  It made the mirror look like a chrome-framed picture postcard.  More spectacular, though, was what I saw when I looked back up:  A huge, thick rainbow was perfectly centered over the highway before me, framing within it an arch of dark clouds fronted by intermittent bolts of lightning that seemed to flash directly down from the rainbow.  It was as if God was staging a rock concert, and it was almost time for the band...

Leg 2: Round-Trip from Miami Beach FL to Ridgeland SC

After taking in my fill of skim milk, scrambled eggs and Don Francisco's Colombia Supremo, I rolled down to the 5th Street Shell and filled up my tank, logging the receipt and the start of leg 2 at 7:27am.  From there I made the short hop across the causeway and headed north on IH-95.  Being a Saturday, traffic was light and I had smooth sailing all the way through South Florida's tri-county metroplex and northward to my first stop at Vero Beach.  In fact, I had good weather, open roads and easy riding all the way through Jacksonville, Georgia and on into South Carolina.

I reached my turnaround point at Ridgeland SC at 3:08pm ... as did the first of several summer showers and thunderstorms I'd be riding through as I headed back southward.  Just north of Brunswick GA, the rain started coming down in slanted sheets that slowed me to 15mph for a few minutes.  But once I punched through, that was the worst of it.

Sunset was approaching as I stopped for gas in Titusville FL at 7:30pm.  Clouds would fill the skies for the rest of the evening, but I was south of the rain now and had dry roads from there to Miami.  "Dry" roads, yes, but not necessarily "safe" roads...  Somewhere near Mile Marker 100 by Stuart at around 9:00pm, I hit something lying in the road that looked, felt and sounded like either a heavy metal garbage can lid or an overturned manhole cover.  It was dark in color, and lying on black asphalt under a starless night sky, so I didn't see it until I was right on top of it.  The impact ripped the spring off my sidestand and took out my speedometer and odometer.  Luckily though, I was still upright and rolling, and I didn't detect any other damage.  So at my next and final gas stop in Jupiter, I bungied the sidestand then rode her safely home to SoBe.

ABATE pimpin for Richard Lester?

to Biker Rogue for this one:

ABATE of Florida Pimpin For A.I.M.?
I received an unsolicited letter from A.I.M. (Aid To Injured Motorcyclist)
ABATE of Florida states they Decided To Offer This protection to me.
I will not bore you with the whole letter as it is an advertisement. Below is the start of the letter. What I will tell you it is signed by Richard M. Lester and does mention his law firm.

Dear Fellow Biker:
I did not join a Motorcycle Rights Organization to receive what I consider Junk Mail.  When some one mentions AIM the first thing that comes into my mind is Ambulance Chaser.  Now I have an organization I belong to either giving my information to a company that I have no interest in and or acting as one of their agents.  The relationship of Doc Reichenbach the president of ABATE of Florida to AIM and NCOM is common knowledge and I believe this mailing further shows where his true allegiance is.  I for one do not want to receive mail of this type and I will be notifying my chapter president to that fact.   If you do not want to receive any either I suggest you do the same.

As a side note this is not the first insurance program ABATE of FLorida has so generously offerred their members.  Years back ABATE of Florida made a good looking female insurance agent a "life member"  after offering anyone who signed up for it a free death benefit.

The promise again was your information would be kept private. This writer did not sign up after being advised by another insurance agent that cheap policies were often offered as away of developing lists to be sold to other agencies. She did not say she could prove this was the case with the policy ABATE was offered.

We do know that we were never contacted by phone by agents trying to sell us other policies.  We do know members who signed up for the free policies who were.  Take that for what it is worth.

However  if you google National Coalition of Motorcyclists you will be taken to this site:

Oh wait now, what do we have here? Hmmm James D. Reichenbach Chairman of the board.  So lets see We have the unpaid President of ABATE of Florida, who just happens to be the lobbyist for ABATE of Florida that gets paid by ABATE of FLorida to lobby the state of Florida for taxpayers money to use for, we don't know, who also happens to be the Chairman of the board of the National Coalition of Motorcyclists who is what? Oh yeah really AIM (AID ro injured motorcyclist) who is made up of Attorneys that sue insurance companies.   AND also provides ABATE members with some kind of INSURANCE?????

BUT HANG ON NOW, cause ya like see, we already new this.  We have posted on it before as well as about the time Ed Youngblood of the American Motorcycle Association and others walked away from NCOM when they came to some kind of realization that, "hey, these dudes are just in it for the money!

So why are we posting this again and laughing our ass of?  BECAUSE THIS INSURANCE OFFER WAS MADE AFTER THE "OL SMURF" WAS RE-ELECTED  President of ABATE of Florida.

Um, if they was so concerned about the general membership why did they not offer this before the erection, whoops excuse me, I meant election?

Please do not tell me I am the only one rolling on the floor laughing my ass off?

Well just for the hell of it here is part of a post we did on  12-10-07 that details the when, how, and why
other motorcycle rights organizations pulled out of NCOM, entitled:

Who was Duped? MRF? ABATE of FLORIDA? Motorcyclists?

I have provided excerpts and the links to the stories below that outline how and why the AMA, MRF and others resigned from the NCOM Advisory Board. Read them and ask yourself what has NCOM done for you lately????

MRF President, VP of Gov't Relations resign from NCOM over product liability lawsuits

On July 27, MRF President Mark Buckner resigned as the MRF Liaison to the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM). Board of Advisors, and Vice President of Government Relations Wayne Curtin resigned from the NCOM Legislative Task Force. Buckner and Curtin resigned over issues regarding product liability lawsuits filed by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (AIM) attorneys. Aim, a group of attorneys affiliated with the law offices of Richard M. Lester, provides funding for NCOM's activities. Other resignations over the lawsuits include Ed Netterberg, Chairman of the NCOM Board of Advisors, board members Bob Letourneau and Etta Vanesky, Industry Liaison to the board Bob Jackson, Legislative Task Force members Sherman Packard and Butch Olson, Executive Director Pepper Massey-Swan, NCOM National Council members Steve Clover and Dave Dwyer, and Craig Clinch, European Coordinator of the International Coalition of Motorcyclists (ICOM). ICOM has since restructured its activities and is no longer affiliated with AIM or the law offices of Richard M. Lester.

Other resignations from NCOM

TO: A.B.A.T.E. OF S.D. OFFICERS AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS

FROM: ED NETTERBERG

SUBJECT: MY REASONS FOR RESIGNING AS CHAIRMAN AND BOARD MEMBER OF THE NCOM BOARD OF ADVISORS

Enclosed is a volume of material (118 pages), for you reading pleasure, giving you the pros, cons, and everything in between in reference to what has become known as the AIM scandal. You read, you decide whether or not A.B.A.T.E. of S.D. should still endorse the AIM (attorney) program.

The enclosed material will be in five sections:

Section 1: All written resignations. Richard Lester's memos to the NCOM board of advisors, AIM atty's, and ICOM. Craig Clinch from England report to the NCOM board of advisors.

Section 2: AMA's article in reference to Richard Lester. Memo to Ed Youngblood, President of AMA from Bill Bish AIM/NCOM. Ed Youngblood's answer to Bill Bish.

Section 3: Two actual product liability law suits against Harley-Davidson.

Section 4: Minutes and news releases from the NCOM 7/27/96 meeting.

Section 5: Letters supporting Richard Lester and his AIM/NCOM program.

It has been stated and implied that Pepper Massey-Swan and others including myself have resigned from NCOM because we have alternative motives and we are trying to destroy the motorcycle rights movement. I believe this is a deliberate attempt to try to take the heat off where it really belongs and that is with Richard Lester and his AIM attorneys. They are the ones who filed the product liability law suits and the ones that lied about this issue from the very beginning.

AMA Exposes Richard Lester
Early this year, rumors began to circulate that Mr. Lester and his colleagues were actively involved in as many as 20 suits alleging that riders had suffered unnecessary leg injuries in part because manufacturers had negligently failed to incorporate leg protectors into their motorcycle designs. The rumors became open allegations on July 5 when Lester's long-time assistant, Pepper Massey-Swan, quit her job in an act of conscience. She posted a letter to NCOM's Board of Advisors and Legislative Task Force, charging that Lester had, when questioned by her, denied that AIM attorneys were representing such cases, adding that he would not tolerate such litigation. When she confronted him with the facts, Massey-Swan said Lester admitted the existence of the cases, but refused to order AIM attorneys to cease their involvement.

She stated in her letter, "It has been my understanding that NCOM was created to assist in the fight against anti-motorcycle legislation. AIM was a vehicle by which we were able to achieve this goal. ICOM was formed to offer our support to our European brothers and sisters, currently pouring all of their efforts into fighting against legislation that would force manufacturers to put leg protectors on motorcycles. Being a part of these law-suits in any way is contradictory to the core of beliefs and principles of the motorcyclist rights movement." She continued, "This is a devastating blow to motorcyclists, one that's sting will be felt for many years to come. That this office would be associated with these anti-motorcycle lawsuits is despicable and unprincipled."

Apparently the NCOM staff was not the only group kept in the dark about AIM's product liability suits. According to Ed Netterberg, chairman of the NCOM Board of Advisors, that group also remained uninformed. In a memo to the Board, Netterberg said, "I believe this type of information was withheld from us deliberately, knowing it would be unacceptable."

On the same day that Massey-Swan delivered her letter of resignation, Lester, who was vacationing in Kenya at the time, quickly moved into damage control mode. He sent memos to his AIM attorneys and to the NCOM Board of Advisors and Legislative Task Force members in the United States, and wrote a letter to motorcyclist rights leaders in Europe, seeking an urgent meeting in London. The memos were marked: "FOR YOU EYES ONLY. READ AND DESTROY."

In these documents he admitted that the litigation was going on, that he had knowledge of it, and that is was all a mistake which resulted from "inattentiveness" and his failure to "note the obvious conflict." One memo acknowledged that in the neighborhood of 25 such cases had been pursued by AIM attorneys, and stated "In hindsight I should have seen that while trying to enforce the legal rights of the injured biker against the manufacturer, the AIM attorneys were aiding the forces trying to mandate leg protectors in Europe." He described the whole affair as a "screw-up."

You can go here if you would like to read more about NCOM and ABATE of Florida. OR not. Wither or I will continue to laugh my ass off cause this is funny!

YO, FLORIDA BIKERS, ARE WE RIDING FREE YET!Add to Technorati Favorites

ABATE of FLorida, from brotherhood to totalitarian regime

Little is known about how ABATE of Florida really works as those in power go to great lengths to keep the general membership from knowing to much.

By opening membership to any who can come up with $25.00, motorcyclist or not, without any expectation that the potential member will actually do anything, insures that the membership will quickly have among it's membership many who have no intention of actually doing or knowing anything. It's pretty much a no brainer.

We are aware of members who hold office in chapter(s) who to the best of my knowledge have never taken pen to paper to write a legislator.  In fact we have even heard one Vice President of a chapter state that. "they were not about the politics, that they were in it primarily for the "brotherhood!"

Strange comment from an officer in a "political" organization.

We are also aware of member(s) who either hoped to use ABATE as a stepping stone to patching out with a "club" or  settle for ABATE membership as they are not "club" caliber.

Of course that does not extend to all ABATE members as there are many who are serious and sincere about what they believe the mission to be.  However, although ABATE of FLorida consistently states that they are not a "club", the hierarchy operates in a very club like manner.

It is somewhat of an unwritten policy that ABATE business is not to be discussed with other organizations and financials are not to be printed in chapter newsletters (that dictate was in fact a written policy at one time). They are somewhat secret. In fact the President/lobbyist of ABATE of Florida, James D. Reichenbach, once threatened to sue a Chapter president and ABATE of FLorida, because a chapter (Whitesands Chapter, Panama City area) printed his salary in their newsletter.

The chapters contention was that many of it's members and/or non member supporters did not go to state meetings and had a right to know what they were paying for or supporting.  It is  not unusual for a not for profit organization to make the salaries of their directors public and many can be found online for anyone to view. The chapter felt the need to take such action in their newsletter as the minutes of state meetings published in the states newsletter, "The Masterlink," are often sanitized beyond recognition. The chapters action in any other organization would be referred to as "Transparency".

The other MC like characteristic that  ABATE of Florida engages in is "claiming of territory".  All to often the President has claimed in the legislature and in public that "ABATE of Florida" is the only motorcycle rights organization in the state of Florida and at times certain members have tried to encourage other organizations to get involved in certain activities, but  only if done so under the "ABATE" name.

Threats and intimidation are often used against anyone who would go against them.  Although physical intimidation has been tried, the most frequent tactic is to threaten to "sue".  Another tactic is threats to utilize the members of ABATE to engage in harassment.

Some people are actually intimidated by these threats thinking that ABATE of FLorida has a more active membership and more power than they actually do.

First, using the politically non active chapter vice president as an example, a significant number of members are not really going to do anything other than ride motorcycles, drink beer, chase tits and pretend they are one percenter's.  Unfortunately by doing so they demonstrate disrespect for true 1%'s.

Second, there is a significant number of members who do not support the tactics used by the state president/lobbyist and his "do boys".

So what you end up with is a fractured organization that becomes more impotent and irrelevant as time goes on.

As most know by now, the current Board of Directors has been elected to another term. What many do not know however was how close the election was and how the bylaws of the organization are skewed to insure the status quo.

Before we go into the mechanics of how the current by laws work (which as we have witnessed are often violated by the president himself at his convenience) following is a breakdown of the most recent election that has been provided to us by an unnamed source:

I received the following from a ABATE officer about the election

The entire state board voted the same, 12 votes leaving the board unchanged.

With the way they let the state board vote anyone running against an incumbent on the state board would need a minimum of 22 of the 32 chapters just to break even and thats simply not fair.

Giving the state board 12 votes requires the challenger to get 6 of the chapters just to start out even, in affect one would needed 23 of the 32 chapters to actually win.

If this information is correct then it should be fairly clear how any opposition is clearly hamstrung. Should any chapter delegate get sick or die on the way to a meeting, then half the votes of the chapter are not counted.

In other words those individual members have had their vote taken from them.

The other consideration is, as ABATE of Florida loses chapters, as they have in the past couple of years, for any reason, including but not limited to a board decision to attempt to shut a chapter down, then the vote becomes even more skewed in favor of the sitting board.

A sweet set up indeed

Also, this writer has been present in past state meetings where it has been stated  the legislative representative of a chapter is not bound by the chapter. That the legislative representatives position requires that they have more knowledge regarding certain issues and that there may be times will have to make a decision based on knowledge available to them and not necessarily the chapter.

In fact we have witnessed the Florida ABATE president engage in this very action on the floor of the legislature in his role as lobbyist, i,e. vote exactly opposite to how the organization directed him to vote.

However it has been experience that leaves us with the opinion that the State organization in general is not well informed on the how or what practices the lobbyist actually engages in while at the legislature.

We have since learned from a source that because of the inequities of the current system that certain members and/or chapters will be proposing a by-laws change relating to how elections are held.

We hope they are successful in this endeavor. We also hope that they are aware that reportedly, the main reason Whitesands chapter decided to pull out of the organization is because after their constant attempts to find out "where does the money go" they were consistently denied the floor at state meetings.

It would appear that any issue to be brought up before a state meeting must be submitted in writing and approved prior to the the actual meeting date. Of course there are parliamentary ways to get around this. Unfortunately we have witnessed the board throw bylaws and parliamentary procedure out the window when the boards power is threatened.

Most notably at a state meeting in Okahumpa, Florida a few years back when three chapters were pursuing similar issues. In fact this writer was cornered and threatened after the meeting.

That was a few years back, yet the attempts at intimidation continue, this writer was once again threatened in Daytona this year by the ABATE president as the ABATE President apparently thought this writer was on his "territory." Fortunately this writer is aware that ABATE of Florida can not "claim territory."

It may be considering the ABATE of Florida Presidents affiliation with NCOM/Aim that they are attempting to take a page from playbook that led to the American Motorcycle Associations distancing themselves from NCOM back in the early days.

When it was learned that it truly is all about the money for some who claim to represent the concerns of the motorcyclists.

Our suspicion is that the ABATE President is fortunate that NCOM is financially able to insure that their puppet is only seen in a positive light when it comes to matters of press should it chose to operate in such a manner.

We don't know what the ABATE member from GULF COAST chapter understood about his rights after the ABATE of FLorida President subsequently laid hands on him at the campground in Daytona. It seems that incident is no longer mentioned!

We wish the concerned members of ABATE luck in there endeavor and hope that we can report progress. However to all members we must emphasize: ABATE of Florida can never be a Brotherhood, fellowship or rights organization as long as any member is allowed to bully, intimidate or threaten another member.

You do not need a by law to keep that from occurring! You need balls!Add to Technorati Favorites
